On Trails, by Pine Islander Robert Moor (prices vary)
Rob Moor was a PIC camper and staff member for five summers. He taught Woodcraft, and in 2016 published On Trails after thru hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2009. In this excellent book, Rob takes readers on a captivating journey to uncover the hidden stories behind the paths we walk, both literal and metaphorical. Blending adventure, science, history, and philosophy, Rob examines how trails form, endure, and vanish, shedding light on profound questions about order, chaos, and humanity’s evolving relationship with nature and technology. There’s no doubt that his time at PIC heavily informs his writing, making this the perfect read for an older camper or alum!
Everyday Hoodie from Fayettechill (1/2 off right now!) ($47)
This lightweight, breathable hoodie sweatshirt is perfect for the Pine Island camper in your life. It strikes the ideal balance between comfort and practicality for camp life. Cool summer mornings and evenings by Great Pond often call for an extra layer, and a hoodie provides just the right amount of warmth without being bulky. Its breathable fabric keeps campers comfortable during active days, while the hood offers extra protection from the elements, whether it’s a light drizzle or a bit of sun. Plus, it’s easy to pack and versatile enough to wear for activities ranging from hiking and canoeing to campfire nights, making it a must-have for any camper’s gear list.
Fly Loose 2.0 Sweatpants, from Pine Islander Ben Cabot ($54)
Check out these amazing sweatpants designed by PIC camper and staff member Ben Cabot! Ben is going into his eighth summer on Great Pond, and when he’s not at camp or studying at Saint Lawrence University, he’s designing apparel through his brand Fly Loose. These joggers are ideal for relaxing in the tent after a full day of activities or staying warm during cooler mornings and evenings. The tapered design ensures they don’t drag on the ground, keeping them clean and durable even on rugged terrain. With secure pockets for small essentials and a snug fit that allows for ease of movement, these sweatpants are versatile enough for everything from lounging by the campfire after a long day on the trail to participating in camp games.
Annie’s Mac & Cheese (prices vary)
What better way to bring the magic of PIC trail food to your home than to cook up a pot of Annie’s Mac and Cheese? This is a staple on canoeing and hiking trips, and we rarely send out a trip without at least one Annie’s dinner on the menu. There are plenty of varieties, but Shells and White Cheddar is a PIC classic! Find Annie’s in any grocery store.
SPAM (prices vary)
How could we recommend Annie’s without also mentioning SPAM? Does it stand for “Sizzle Pork and Mmm,” or maybe “Specially Processed American Meat?” We aren’t sure, but what we do know is that it’s perfect in Annie’s Mac and Cheese or mixed into scrambled eggs on the trail. We’re all about healthy living at PIC, but we also understand that “healthy” also means enjoying delicious bites. Enter: SPAM.
L.L. Bean Wicked Warm Midweight Long Underwear Top ($20)
Every Pine Islander has been there – you go out on a trip and, even though it’s July, the early mornings and late evenings are chillier than you expected! This is where this L.L. Bean long sleeve top comes in handy. It is compact enough to fit easily into a hiking pack or waterproof duffle bag, so it’s perfect for trips, and would be an excellent layer to bring along with you to the King’s Game. Just in case, you know, it’s rainy and 60 degrees (flashback: 2024).
Orcas Flannel Shirt from Fayettechill (1/2 off right now!) ($55)
As you can see, we love the amazing products from Fayettechill! Flannel provides excellent insulation during chilly mornings and evenings, making it a practical layering piece for life in the Maine outdoors. Its durable construction withstands the rigors of camp activities, from woodshop projects to hiking adventures. The soft fabric is comfortable enough for all-day wear, while the button-up design allows for easy temperature regulation. Whether gathered around the campfire or exploring the island, a flannel shirt is a versatile and timeless staple for any camper’s wardrobe.
Great Pond Topographic Map ($40+)
Can’t you picture this on your favorite Pine Islander’s wall? This map is a great tribute to the place we call home in the summer, and would be an excellent way to show your Pine Island pride. Leave it as-is so you can spread it out on the table and explore the Great Pond area, or frame it and put it on display in a bedroom or home office. This is sure to be a conversation starter!
Great Pond Wooden Map by Lake Art ($89+)
Another amazing PIC-themed art piece for your culturally-elevated Pine Islander. These wooden maps are handmade in Michigan by a small family business, and we love that they chose Great Pond as one of their product locations. This is a classy gift that will bring Pine Island to your living room, dining room, or office.
Vermont Sharp Cheddar Cheese from Cabot Creamery (prices vary)
Can you tell that we love to eat at PIC, and that we have a lot of opinions on our food choices? Well, when you’re out bagging peaks and crushing miles in a canoe, you need to make sure you’re fueling your body with the best of the best. We introduce: Cabot cheese. Snack on it mid-hike, throw it in a tortilla with pepperoni for a mountaintop lunch, or cut it into some scrambled eggs for a pre-dawn breakfast. So many ways to enjoy your dairy! Find Cabot at any local grocery store or market.
Dr. Bronners’s Pure-Castille Soap (prices vary)
The original all-one magic soap! You can buy Dr. B’s at most grocery stores and natural foods markets, and we highly recommend it for soap swims in Great Pond and showers back home. Everyone has their favorite scent; ours is peppermint!
Pocket Naturalist Guide to Maine Birds ($8)
There are so many birds around camp and on the trail, and one of the best parts of the summer is identifying them! Use this guide to figure out who is chirping all around you, and use it at home to learn more about the feathered friends in your backyard. Plus, your purchase supports the Maine Audubon Society, a worthy cause and friend of Pine Island.
Darn Tough Field Trip Micro Crew Lightweight Hiking Sock ($18)
I mean, need we say more? We wouldn’t wear any other sock around camp or on the trail!
Happy Holidays!
