More than fifteen years ago, then-director Ben Swan walked into the office of University of Virginia nursing professor Theresa Carroll with a simple question: Could she help him find a nursing student to serve as Pine Island’s camp medic? That chance conversation grew into an extraordinary partnership that has brought a UVA nursing student to Pine Island nearly every summer since.

This summer, UVAToday featured the story of that connection, and of this year’s medic, Sarah Jun, whose experience at camp is helping to shape her future as a nurse.

It’s a terrific look at a partnership that has enriched both Pine Island and the University of Virginia students who have called this place home.

We’re closing in on the final days of another great summer and we’ll share more stories, photos, and highlights from camp in the days and weeks ahead. Stay tuned!
