Dear Friends of Pine Island Camp,
What do you really learn when you learn to canoe?
At first, it’s how to hold a paddle. Then it’s how to make a canoe go where you want it to go. How to work with a partner. How to read the wind. How to get back into a swamped canoe. How to paddle when the water gets rough.
At Pine Island, our canoeing ranks are designed to take a boy from those first strokes all the way to Master Canoeist. Along the way, he learns to paddle from the bow and stern, transfer between canoes, paddle solo, read rapids, and respond when things don’t go as planned.
But the rank sheet isn’t really about strokes and skills. It’s about what happens along the way.
A boy learns to pay attention, to make decisions, and to stay calm when conditions change. He learns to be responsible for his canoe and the people in it.
This isn’t just outdoor education; it’s an education in life skills.
All the best,

Sarah Hunter
