Dear Friends of Pine Island Camp,
Imagine this: You’re a young man of about fourteen, enjoying life on a small island with your friends, when a group of girls from a neighboring camp come sailing within shouting distance of your tent, which sits, sides rolled up, on the narrow strip of land at the end of your little oasis.
You exchange some awkward greetings, but all too soon, they’re off, called back by their instructor. It’s a chance encounter, and a fleeting one. What to do?
The solution came quickly. The boys wrote notes to the girls, introducing themselves and explaining how they could be contacted. They placed the slips of paper in a PIC water bottle and made a plan for delivering it.
I suspect that this particular form of communication was not widely used outside of Pine Island Camp this summer.
You can read their story, “Message in a Bottle,” along with other tales from camp, in this edition of the Mid-Summer Pine Needle.
We had another great summer. We hope you did, too.
All the best,

Sarah Hunter
